Julian

Julian is a small town in the northeast corner of San Diego county. It is known for gold and apple pie. It also does a good job of turning apple pie into gold. Started as a gold mining town in the late 1800's its early history was as wild and wooly as any gold mining settlement. There are still active gold mines around Julian, but most of the locals are involved in separating the tourists from their gold with a number of apple pie bakeries, restaurants, Bed and Breakfasts and antique stores. A very worthwhile way to spend a day.

Near Julian are many other sites. The Great Southern Overland Stage Route is a few miles to the east. Lake Cuyamaca offers great fishing in an alpine setting. The Mount Palomar observatory is close by, or if you are hungry take Hwy 79 north and check out Dudleys bakery or Tom's Chicken.
