This is a 1972 Pinzgauer, made by Steyr-Puch of Graz, Austria.
This cross country military troop transport was used mainly by the Swiss
army, but is now used all over the world as anything from a military vehicle
to the daily family car.
The Pinzgauer is powered by a 4 cylinder air cooled Puch engine, designed
specifically use in this vehicle only. It will operate at any angle the Pinz
can maneuver, as the pump will always pick up oil. The dual Zenith carbs are
also as versatile. The transmission is a 5 speed German built ZF, combined
with a 2 speed transfer case give 10 forward speeds. 4 wheel drive is shift
on the fly and hydraulically actuated, along with front and rear locking
differentials. Top speed is about 65, and handles nicely. Total capacity is
10 people or 2200 pounds. 4 wheel coil spring independent suspension with
portal axles. The Pinzgauer is rated 45 degrees side slope, and uphill
climbing is limited to tire traction only. The canvas top easily fold up to
make a convertible, the back seats fold down to make a pickup truck bed. In
wet weather, it can go through 28 inches of water, more if the air intake is
raised. Only about 1000 of these incredibly durable vehicles were made a year
from 1972 to 1985, and are becoming understandably more popular by the day.
Much more capable than a Hummer at a fraction of the price!
No wonder, owner Rick Fredricks of Bermuda Dunes is smiling. |
